Wetland for the World Orchid Conference(WOC21)
WOSA was approached by the organizers of 21st World Orchid Conference and Show (WOC21) to build a 200 m² wetland in the Sandton Convention Centre (SCC) as part of WOC21 which will be staged on 10-14 September 2014.
Gary Marnewick, a wetland consultant and Piet Uys, a landscape gardener, developed the design concept featuring three distinct wetlands, Highveld wetland, Cape wetland, and a Tropical Coastal peat wetland.
On the suggestion of Anthony Schaeffler, a committee member, a test site was built which will allow sub-suppliers the opportunity to build components for the installation in the SCC.
Regular meetings have been held to coordinate the various activities that are inherent in the successful execution of the exhibit.
This event is the ideal platform to launch WOSA and recruit volunteers to develop the necessary the infrastructure to implement our conservation activities and demonstrate the importance and functions of wetlands.
Although it is not a good time for the flowering of indigenous orchids there will nevertheless be a good display through the judicious forcing of plants over this coming winter.
The Wetland Exhibit will undoubtedly be one of the main attractions at the 21st World Orchid Conference and Show.
